And with Hispanic Heritage Month in full swing, a common question that arises is the difference between Hispanics and Latinos. Some may worry about using the wrong term to address a group of people and want to ensure they are using the correct term.
This is the condition that people in North, Central, and South America find themselves in, including many Caribbean nations as well. The terms that are usually used to refer to people in these regions or with cultural ties to their people are either “Latino” or “Hispanic.”
The difference between these two terms can be confusing without some historical perspective and even with some perspective, their intended meaning can vary. “Latino” usually refers to anyone sharing heritage with Latin American countries, meaning South and Central America and some Caribbean nations. “Hispanic” was a term popularized in the 1970s to differentiate people with Spanish heritage from any of Spain’s colonies in Latin America. Due to this, the term “Hispanic” is a decent catch-all term for most of the cultures in Central and South America and it is those cultures that we celebrate during this month.
